Exclusive Interview! Destiny’s Child Singer Michelle Williams Talks About Her New Play, Charity Work & Addresses Those Reunion Rumors!
INF Daily was lucky enough to spend some time chatting with Grammy Award winning Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child. She’s currently touring the country with a play (coming to a city near you) and is giving a lot of her time and talents to a charity organization named TERI that helps families and kids with autism.
INF: Hello! You are so busy these days Michelle! We understand you are touring the country with your play What Your Husband Doesn’t know.
Michelle: Yes, I’m in a play. We’ve done a lot of cities so far and we have about 12 more cities to go.
INF: How is the tour going?
Michelle: The tour is going very well. I love touring whether I’m singing or acting – I just love it.
INF: Does it help you and the cast become closer when you’re all on the bus doing a roadtrip together?
Michelle: Oh absolutely. You get to talk to your cast mates, find out about their life. So when you’re on stage, it looks like a conversation with your friend. So it’s fun to be on stage and get into your character but still you have that comfort with the other person.
INF: You’ve been so successful doing theater here in the States and over in England, have you thought about doing films.
Michelle: Oh, I would love love love love to do a movie! I would love to do a romantic comedy. Or something with Will Ferrell.
INF: Oh he’s great!
Michelle: Yeah, he is so funny. And I hear that’s how he is in real life, just really funny so I would love to meet him someday.
INF: So you have the Grammy, and now you’re working in theater, are you working towards the Tony part of the EGOT dream?
Michelle: Oh, well I never thought about the Oscar part, but that would be great if I was in that situation, but definitely a Tony Award.
INF: Of course, I have to ask, we always hear rumors that Destiny’s Child might get back together. Is there any truth in that?
Michelle: Well, that’s just a rumor. The girls and I haven’t discussed business for a while so it’s just a rumor.
INF: (chuckling) Are you holding out on us Michelle?
Michelle: (laughing) No, I’m not I promise!
INF: Okay. Can you tell us about the charity that you’re working with TERI? How did you get involved with them?
Michelle: Well, I got involved last year. I was asked to make an appearance at a charity event and got so attached to this cause. So I just volunteered my time in whatever capacity they needed me. It’s such a great organization dealing with people with autism and other developmental disabilities. And I got a chance to meet some of the residents first hand in the home. And then I found out that they’re trying to build a 20 acre facility that will have equestrian center, aquatics, arts and crafts facility and theater and I was just blown away.
INF: If people wanted to donate to or help this organization, where can they go?
Michelle: They can go to Teriinc.org. It’s a great place. You can donate of course and you can also go there and see what’s going on at the facility. The organization is really hands-on. They are really trying to find innovative ways for people to live their lives. When you have autism or a development disability, of course you appreciate research to try and find a cure or preventative measure, but hey, it’s not like that right now. My Godson has autism so he and his family need some tools to live now. I’m not saying that we don’t need research, of course that’s so important but we need to focus on ways to live with it right now too. They might find a cure in 30 years but that doesn’t help this person right now.
INF: Right, because in that 30 years time, you hope that people can get the most of out life.
Michelle: Exactly. You can’t just put yourself in a bubble and say okay, I’ll come out in 30 more years. You gotta live your life.
INF: Where is that bubble! Sometimes I want to go there.
Michelle: (laughing) You said it. Me too. They need a bubble for everything. A bubble for stress and a bubble for days when I don’t want to deal with people. But you know what? When you think about it, there are people with much bigger problems than stress.
INF: Oh absolutely. This is a wonderful cause.
Michelle: Oh, I’m very excited about working with Teri. It’s something close to my heart. Another thing I want to do is get involved with a group or start my own for bullying. Kids at school on a day to day basis don’t know how to deal with bullying at school.
INF: So getting back to acting, do you have a favorite actress? Someone’s career you’d like to emulate?
Michelle: Oh my, Meryl Streep is just incredible. And Alfre Woodard. There are really great actresses out there but Alfre and Meryl are so natural on screen. It’s like they don’t even have to try.
INF: They’re the kind of actresses that make people think, “I can do that!”
Michelle: Exactly. Acting is all about being vulnerable. If you can’t be vulnerable and open up your soul, you’re not going to make it at all.
INF: Just one more question before we let you go – we’d love to know who you would pick to play you in the movie of your life?
Michelle: Hmmm…probably Zoe Saldana. She’s a great actress who is making many strides. And her level of work integrity – I’m loving it.
Thanks so much for talking with us Michelle! You can check her in What My Husband Doesn’t Know and get involved with her cause Teri.
