Was it the hair that did them in? We may never know, but Ashlee Simpson has filed for divorce from Pete Wentz, after nearly three years of marriage. Did we mean Ashlee’s recent dramatic haircut or Pete’s newly natural ‘fro? Our lips are sealed.

Ashlee and Pete married in a semi-quickie wedding at her parents’ Los Angeles mansion in May 2008. Simpson was three months pregnant with son Bronx Mowgli at the time. Papa Joe Simpson performed the ceremony passing on the Simpson Sister curse. Ashlee’s filed for joint custody of Bronx.

Ashlee’s people told TMZ she was sick of Pete’s “erratic” behavior. Pete’s long been reported to frequently leave Ashlee at home caring for Bronx while he parties. Their source noted, “She really wanted out.”

Pete’s people tell a different (and even less creative) story: they simply grew apart.

Of course in their official statement Simpson and Wentz make it clear they plan on staying BFFs. And we’ve never seen that turn sour.
