We’ll admit it: this one came as quite the jaw-dropper to us. Though it’s been reported over the last few weeks that relations have thawed between Bristol Palin and baby daddy Levi Johnston, with Levi publicly apologizing for his “youthful indiscretions” (aka talking some serious sh*t about the Palins for money… and posing for Playgirl) it looks like it was all part of a very carefully organized PR attempt to get the public to warm to Levi. The on-again couple just announced via Us Weekly that they’re engaged again.

According to Bristol, Sarah Palin wasn’t told about the engagement – which happened two weeks ago – at the time of Us’ interview. “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board” Bristol said.

It doesn’t sound like the Palins are thrilled, to say the least. Their frosty statement, released to the Today Show this morning, read: “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what’s best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.”

Translation: “We still think you’re a douche bag but we’re not gonna use that word. And we’re not going to let the past be the past.” Not that we can blame them – remember, Levi is the same guy who – less than a year ago – said Sarah Palin referred to her baby son Trig (who has Down’s Syndrome) as “retarded.” Obviously Levi and Bristol weren’t expecting congrats and a party, and it’s clear they’re not getting either. They’re hoping to get married in the next six weeks.
