Court Rules Naomi Campbell Will Have to Testify About Blood Diamond

Model Naomi Campbell will have to testify against former Liberian president Charles Taylor in his war crimes trial after all. Today the Special Court for Sierra Leone in the The Hague ruled that Campbell must appear before the court to address issues regarding an uncut diamond Taylor gave her after a party in 1997. Actress Mia Farrow will also appear (unlike Naomi Campbell, Farrow has always been willing to testify for the court). Naomi told Mia – who was also at the party – about the blood diamond over breakfast the next morning.

Campbell had resisted appearing before the court, claiming she “doesn’t want to get involved.”

Roughly half a million people were the victims of “killings, systematic mutilation or other atrocities in [Sierra Leone's 1991-2002 civil] war, with some of the worst crimes committed by child soldiers who were drugged to desensitize them.” Charles Taylor is on trial for dealing in blood diamonds and supporting Sierra Leone’s rebels.

Naomi Campbell is shown on a photo shoot on Monday in New York City.
