OUR FIRST LOOK AT TIM BURTON’S ALICE IN WONDERLAND!

Tim Burton is hard at work filming his next opus, a screen adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic story Alice in Wonderland.

Currently shooting in Cornwall, England, the part of Alice will be played by a young Australian actress by the name of Mia Wasikowska. The movie will be a mix of live action and CGI and star Burton’s favorite muse Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter-too perfect!

Also on set with the actors were Burton’s wife Helena Bonham Carter and their baby daughter (still unnamed) who appears to be dressed up as an extra in the film.

I’m so excited for this, the set and the costumes look amazing!  Unfortunately though we have a bit of a wait, Alice in Wonderland is expected for 2010.  Guess for now I’ll have be satisfied with the cartoon or just listen to "White Rabbit" on repeat.

  • snoopyjode

The Bonham-Carter/Burton baby’s name is Nell. Here is an article detailing the reason her parents chose the name.

  • crescent fresh

oh my god, i want Alice’s boots!

  • Snow Pie

Yep, good job. She looks like an Oxycontin abuser, I mean heroin addict.

Alice on Heroin should be the working title.

  • Becky

Alice is beautiful and that dress is amazing but where’s Johnny?

  • Anonymous

Why is “Alice” on a ship? And she’s too old, she looks like Heather Graham in “From Hell” or Cameron Diaz in “Gangs of New York”. Ugh I hate it already.

  • Anguissette

Hello, TIM BURTON! Of COURSE it’s DARK! Do you really want another silly cartoon filmed in live action?! This is what us Tim Burton fans live for! Quit being a sissy and put your big kid panties on!

  • Anonymous2

Alice is on a ship going home at the end of the film. Don’t know where to but someone on the set said ‘China’?! – Great pictures – are there any more?

by the looks of it, i’d say coleen atwood is doing the costumes. the coat looks very lemony snicket. i hope she is doing them, i love her and she and tim always make magic.

Their baby’s name is Nell by the way and I am sure the movie will be amazing :)

all i have to say is johnny+tim= AMAZING

  • Whiterabbit

I CANT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE TO COME OUT !!!
JOHNNY DEPP, TIM BURTON, all in alice in wonderland…. that makes for an amazing movie

  • TIM BURTON SUCKS

Why can’t Tim Burton just fuck off already? The guy is such a hack film maker that it’s not even funny. I can’t believe that there are millions of people out there who have been fooled into thinking that this asshole has a goddamn bit of talent.

  • Anonymous

Can he not do a movie without Johnny Depp, the guy’s a great actor and all, but there are far superior actors than him out there and this whole Burton and Depp routine is getting very old. Also, I’m excited for him to ruin childhood stories again.

  • rock_faerie2007

I don’t understand why people have to come here and bitch. If you don’t like Tim Burton why are you ready articles about him or what he’s filming? I personally am very excited for this movie and think it will be awesome!

  • Anonymous

My little girl was an extra on this set, if the camera had only moved over a tiny bit you could have seen her! She looked very cute too. The whole experience was mind blowing. How they all know what they are doing beats me. We look forward to my girl’s big night out on the day the movie is released. Just hope she does’t end up on the cutting room floor.

I LOVE JOHNNY DEPP. but anyways. i hope it is amazing! i want to know, though… WHERE IS JOHNNY/MAD HATTER?!?!?!?!?!?! i want to see some pics of him in the movie. i know… he prolly is only gonna be in the 3D part… since he is a rabbit. but still!!!! i want to see him on the set watching! [: so i can look at him!!!!! yeah. he’s hot.

  • Becky

i do not remember a boat in the old disney one…?

look, the fact is, tim burton is an asshole and a shitty film maker. look at the art styles in ALL of his movies. THERE ALLL THE SAME!!!!! “I’m tim burton look at me, im so dark, suck my dick, i’m so dark.” fuck that ass clown

    I am so, SO jealous.

This was my role. I was born to play this role. I would give anything to take Mia’s place. I would DO ANYTHING to BE Mia.

  • lord of the dead

some of you are a bit stupid didnt you know alice in wonderland was a sick book disney only got some of it when they made it cause it was for children

i think timburton is perfect to remake this movie BECAUSE of his dark style

p.s. yes that freakin “nightmare before cristmas” was STUPID!!!!!

  • Eevee

Everyone who thinks Tim Burton is stupid is ignorant and doesnt understand his vision. YOU HAVE TO GIVE INTO THE MOVIE OR YOU WILL NEVER ENJOY IT! You guys are the stupid ones u can’t go into a movie with your thought of it set in stone in your head dumb asses. Burton is a visionary GENIUS everything he has done has such a feeling in every scene in every actor there is something tieng them to the role. I personally would of liked to see Alison Lohman as Alice i think she would of been perfect, but this girl resembles her so it will work itself out. TIM BURTON IS AMAZING AND HIM + JOHNNY DEPP + HELENA BOHNAM CARTER = YET ANOTHER MAGICAL MOVIE!! <33

PS: The Mad Hatter is the man NOT the rabbit, for whoever mentioned Johnny Depp being the rabbit =)

  • Anonymous

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!!!…Im excited.

An older Alice was probably cast for artistic reasons: If I’m not mistaken it’s a tradition in the stage play to cast a young adult woman (rather than a child) as Alice just as it’s a tradition to cast a male for the role of the Queen of Hearts.
I have to admit I didn’t like the craptaculously goofy technicolour Disney version at all particularly, as it removed a good deal of the wit and cynicism of the book.
My personal favourite Alice adaptation so far was the Hallmark version, which was not only the only Hallmark film that was actually good (as opposed to their horrendous adaptations of pretty much every other literary work) but the only “Alice” adaptation that got the somewhat dark, twisted “feel” of the book right in a way that I’m not sure even Tim Burton (who is a personal hero of mine by the way) will manage to top, but his version actually does look like it’s going to be good.
As for the people calling him a “hack”: He sticks with a style that he likes. You may call him a sellout just because his style has gradually become more accepted by the mainstream and is nowadays very commercially accessible, but I say I’m glad he’s become successful at what he does, and more power to him.

  • VJP

Alice’s family is very wealthy so im guessing its their family ship. Im guessing this is the opening to the film.

The absolute best depiction of Alice in Wonderland was done by American McGee.

As an extra on this movie in cornwall with the great man himself, you have to be there to see the genius of the man at work. I had 6 days of the most amazing insight he is truly a god.

  • http://www.MySpace.com/PHATthi T.Hi

As soon as I read about this Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaboration, I knew that I HAAAAAAVE to see this! Not only are THEY the Dynamic Duo (forget Batman and Robin! *lol*), but I adore Tim’s take on movies we’re all used to; like, I have his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I watch it weekly. I imagine this movie will end up just as loved and watched.

  • Anonymous

if you don’t like Tim Burton why are you bothering to read articles about his new movie??

personally i think you are all mad! Tim Burton is my hero! He’s a genius! And i love helena bonham carter!! And Johnny Depp – he is way hot!

so give it a break all you losers who just come on to moan.

    Whats the point??

  • mudman

Necrophiliacs must LOVE Tim Burton, every character in his movies looks like a goddamn corpse, he must have a funeral home beautician on staff at all times. Movies can be dark without beating you over the head with it. Burton was great with Pee-Wee’s big Adventure, what the hell happened?

  • Anonymous

Burton is not perfect.. his version of Charlie and the Chocolate factory was horrible

  • maddog

He should of only done this and NOT Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Why does he insist on remaking and raping classic movies?

  • Puddleglum

I’d rather see him make Beetlejuice 2 than remake another film. He better cast a man in drag as the Queen of Hearts to give this thing a signature “Burton” touch.

  • http://www.idiotboxer.com Kris

Go to http://www.idiotboxer.com if you want to hear some of my thought on Tim Burton.
I think you are all being way too harsh on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. His version was extremely faithful to the book. Stop comparing it to the first version. You should compare them both to the book. That’s right, it was a book first.
Even though I liked Charlie, I have hated almost everything Burton has done, not ebcause of the movies, but because of Burton himself.

I read the Book.. but if you are gonna make a movie based on the book why on gods green earth would you shoot almost the whole thing in crap o vision and over use the hell out of the CG… and then use 1 guy to be all the oompa loompas.. that was weak… Ive loved a lot of his work but he really botched that one!

You people are insane, lol. If anyone can make Alice in Wonderland movie it’s Tim Burton. It reminds me of Big Fish more than POTC.

  • Big Ol’ Al

I think she’s too old, but I trust Burton. In “Through The Looking Glass” she is desribed as 7½ Years old, but behaves like an older child.

  • mel

the person who wrote this article obviously has no idea what they’re talking about. Helena and Tim’s baby girl HAS a name and it is “Nell” and if they think she was dressed up as an extra, they’re delusional. She was taking pictures of the set with her camera, visiting the set. She’s not an extra. i love seeing the pictures. but what the fuck. Do your research before writing a Goddamn news article.

  • Aoede

What stupid people. The complainers most likely read this article because it was about an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland – not because of the person who’s making it.

And she /is/ much too old, not that I’m surprised. It seems to be a Hollywood habit.

  • themom0925

Does anyone else think she looks just like Martha Plimpton?
    Goonies, Parenthood, etc.

  • Anonymous5

Yeah, she’s much older than in the book, but child actors are hard to work with, and there’s labor laws that make filming a movie with a child lead pretty difficult (only allowed to film a certain number of hours a day).

  • Anonymous

or Darlene from the earlier years of “Roseanne”

  • Anonymous

I never liked Alice in Wonderland, so I’m really excited to see a different point of view of it. Tim Burton always films with Johnny Depp people, get used to it. They’re obviously lovers and all the movies they didn’t film together were because of lover spats and fights. Geez…
Why does 2010 have to be so far away???

  • Anonymous

Dynamic Duo you say? No, no, no. They are in fact a trio, and I mean of course, Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, and Danny Elfman … and I will be sorely dissatisfied of Elfman isn’t doing the music for this film.

  • Kara

The girl appears to be quite younger than she is, which is why I believe she can pull it off. She also has done exceptionally well in “The Illusionist” as a small girl, so that shouldn’t be a problem. And at least she’s blonde and wearing blue, those were the things that I was hoping wouldn’t change, and they didn’t. So from the looks of it, and the fact that Tim Burton is directing, this is going to be astounding, and I cannot wait!

isn’t caffeine bad for babies in the womb?

  • Bruce Shank

This will be your typical Burton fare, which is OK. Wondering what happened to their next project Baxter Peanut? I heard Burton/Depp (thru Depp’s production co. Infinitum Nihil) optioned that sci-fi Rick Huffman book. That sounded interesting.

It’s all good, y’all! Alice is pale and perfect! The costumes are brilliant (wouldn’t you love to be the one to sew all that rick-rack on Alice’s skirt?) and Johnny as the Mad Hatter, CGI style, will be brilliant too, as always. TB’s movies make me happy. I can’t even debate the weird, snarky previous comments above….it’s just a movie, people. See it, don’t see it -whatever. HBC’s diet is her concern -consider, perhaps, that she may be consuming caffeine in moderation. And jealousy is a very human, but very self-destructive, emotion. I hope those five posts helped you get it out of your system, anonymous. Persevere, and you may get another, possibly better, opportunity.

    Ok, I’m done.

OMG I am so excited for this movie to come out!! 2010 is way too far away! Johnny Depp and Burton do awesome movies together, with the exception of Charlie (was not blown away by that one) I loved Disney’s Alice as a child and read the whole book when I was older. Burton is the perfect guy to do Alice in a dark way. I love Johnny and can’t wait to see him as the Mad Hatter.

And when is Pirates 4 coming?!?

  • Bowie

Can’t wait to see this. I’m pretty disappointed that there are no Johnny photos here, I’m looking forward to seeing him in his Mad Hatter get up – Does anyone have links to any? It would be greatly appreciated (:

Tim Burton has been a major influence on my life since a young age, i love 99.99% of his work, that doesn’t mean you have to and i don’t want to hear your complaints because you don’t. All of Burton’s films have the same tone as it is his signature. I am very excited about this film, 2010 is to far i thought it was going to be 2009!. I’m very interested to see who is cast as the red queen. All in all im sure it will be another amazing movie :)

  • Anonymous

She is on the ship at the BEGINNING of the film before she travels to the garden party, NOT at the end

I’ve done abit of extra work on this film, and let me tell you,it’s going to be fantastic. I don’t understand why people feel the need to bitch about a film that won’t even be coming out for two more years. If your not a tim burton or alice fan, then just keep your small minded comment’s to yourself,or at the very least, till your seen the film.

  • Anonymous

If you HATE Tim Burton then why would you want to be Mia Wasikowska and star in a Burton film?

Tim Burton is an auteur which means his films are all very stylistic. Hence the films being coined “Burtonesque”. He is a genius. There is no other director like him and all of his films that I’ve seen are so innovative. He’s a pioneer and very involved with his work. You may not like his films but the partnership between Depp and Burton is the most powerful in Hollywood according to the Guiness Book of World Records so they are obviously doing something right.

If you want to talk accuracy, then Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was more true to the book than the original. Plus, Burton also had all of Roald Dahl’s relatives seal of approval…so I think that’s enough to justify Burton’s version being better, don’t you?

  • Anonymous

The reason Alice is older is that this is not going to be a re-do of Alice In Wonderland; it’s my understanding that this is a new story based on the Alice books.

“The problem with making a dark and disturbing version of Alice in Wonderland is that it’s pretty dark and disturbing to begin with, which gives it little training wheels that help cultural firebrands ride it into geniusdom once every eighteen months or so. Masterminding a trippy reinterpretation of Lewis Carroll is like making a version of Crazy Traxi, only crazy! At this point, about the edgiest thing you could do with Alice in Wonderland is try to make it a little less fucking insane.”

  • infinitude

I don’t see a problem with adapting a story that’s “already dark” to something more dark and possibly more modern. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a pretty dark story too, and Burton did a pretty good job of darkening that one up. There are many shades of dark, and some of our more subtly dark films could use a boost in the modern cinema. I give him two cudos!

I like Tim Burton’s originals, but his mutations (Willy Wonka for example) are mockeries of their original film. I fear similar circumstances. It might loose the pure and innocent feel of Alice in Wonderland from a child’s perspective, after all what is more important?

  • Anonymous

do you think he will fuck it up like charlie and the chocolate factory?
    You can’t beat the original!
Why is he doing all these re-makes?

  • Caiti

ok tim’s so called mutilations. for charlie and the chocolate factory, the problem is Tim Burton’s version is just totally a different movie that Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Though they are both based on the same premises and have similar plot lines, Tim Burton’s focus on Willy Wonka was a completely different character than the original.

In Tim Burton’s rather than Willy having all the answers, he must learn from Charlie, however in the original the character dynamic is quite opposite.

His adaptation of this should be quite interesting as most tim burton flicks prove to be.

  • Shadhe

I like his work, but Wonderland and the looking glass are my two favorite books of all time.
If you mess this up, Tim, i swear to god
    i will.
    never. forgive you.

  • Katie

willy wonka and the chocolate factory was a book, and that’s what tim burton’s is based off of. maybe some of you should read a book instead of watch a movie.

  • Anonymous

people have to remember that he is probably adapting it from the cartoon as well as the book. considering, Alice, the 8 year old girl whom Lewis Carroll originally wrote the book for, was a brunette and not blond. and also that disney butchered the book when it was made into a cartoon.

i think it will be an interesting adaptation and cant wait to see it.

  • http://roulettesecretsuncovered.co.uk Ryan G

    Looks quite interesting.

  • Anonymous

Looks like an abortion of a movie; a star vehicle rather than a version of a book. Alice is 9. I don’t think it looks like he is keeping to the age. A ship? Don’t remember the ship Tim, but i guess that’s what Jack Sparrow (TM) sails in on. Burton has made some decent slop; visually great but no sense of narrative, characters without depth but tons of Quirkiness. I’ll give this one a pass and wait for him to go back to original cotton-candy scripts instead of pissing all over the classics.

  • Livvi

I love his somewhat demented takes on classic stories, cant wait for it!

  • Chrix

Nooo!!!! Burton hasn’t had a good movie in years, admit it. Everything he touches is just plain well plain!.. “oh, that was nice.” He will butcher his movie!!! ARRgHH!! He needs to stop making movies.. Really? Johnnie Depp, again???

    oh cliche!

  • Anonymous

Im quite excited! To all those who claim that he butchers stuff, its not for you to decide. This is something that I think Tim will add life to. I have a feeling that this will be one of my favorite movies.

  • tare

I wish people would stop criticizing Burton so much. He’s like wine (and everything else) you either love him or you hate him, if you hate him then don’t read things you stumble upon that have his name right at the top.

I happen to really like Burton, he is a dark and simple artist. he experiments, he has fun, and he know what he likes. I write and illustrate a web comic and I look up to him I hope to one day be as strong an artist as he is.

and Charlie and the chocolate factory? SHUT THE HELL UP it was a great movie- a wonderfully weird movie- and Burton never said this was a remake- this is a reinterpretation of the original story. you’d be complaining even more if it was exactly the same- mix it up! Have some oil with your lettuce.

  • devin

at the people who are trashing tim burton. you people dont no horse shit. tim burton is an amazing director who masters movie making. he made a few changes to sweeney tod (wich won an oscar). whats wrong with changing up alice alittle bit? when this movie is praised by millions im gonna laugh my ass of at all of you. you people abviously dont know anything about the art of movie making, you people obviously like films like disaster movie or something. you people just fail at everything.

  • Phil E. Drifter

Those pics are totally photoshopped, I would know, I’ve seen a few photoshopped images in my day. Those pixelated shadows are all wrong, they totally blow it.

  • Hethra

Wasn’t there supposed to be an adaptation with Marilyn Manson as the Queen? Did it just disappear? I was sorta looking forward to that one, but it’ll be interesting to see what Burton does with this.

  • I already know i’m gonna love this movie! that alice is just perfect! and her clothes! ugh love it!
but of course it is very hard to mess up a books like alice in wonderworld/behind the mirror. allthough Disney did a really good attempt!!
I don’t think i’ll be able to sleep until i’ve seen this great movie!!!

  • Anonymous

Anti-Burtons really don’t seem to understand his movies or where he comes from. He takes well known stories…then twists them. That’s what his fans want to see. If you don’t like his twist on things, simply ignore him.

Nothing cliche about Depp in his movies, they are just good friends that have worked together for years. Just like Bruce Campbell shows up in tons of Sam Raimi movies. Far be it for people in hollywood to have actual “friends” eh? Boggles the mind… ;)

  • anonymous

Well anonymous got one thing right. “That’s what his fans want to see.”

Tim Burton is using the same formula for every movie he makes because that’s what sells. This culture is bred to like the things it already knows. The entertainment industry has realized mainstream consumer society is more likely to buy something if they recognize it. This is because the entertainment industry reinforces this behavior. Rather than developing creative new ideas they fund movies that are based on books (fight club ) or remakes of movies or tv shows everyone’s forgotten (remember the remake of my favorite martian). Or they’ll take a formula that sold well before (nightmare before christmas) and they’ll change it enough for it to come across as new and resell it (corpse bride). Unfortunately the general public is encouraging this behavior by going to these movies. The entertainment industry understands that not only does nostalgia sell, remaking something that’s nostalgic to one market (lets say speed racer, transformers, comicbooks) while being completely new to a generation is a good way to make money (overlapping markets). The problem with this is that the market is getting dumber so the meaning and depth of all those books and old movies and comic books is being sacrificed for the profit of the entertainment industry.

Don’t you realize the name’s Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are only stamped all over this movie because they sell to the widest audience?’

Enjoy your crappy Burton movies, America.

  • Megan

okay, to all of the people comparing tims version of willy wonka to the ‘original’ film willy wonka with van wilder, tim’s version was more along the lines of the TRUE original Charlie and the Chocolate factory by Rohl Dahl, and stuck to the story line moreso than the film done by Mel Stuart. read a book before throwing your criticisms out like they matter. and to all the people saying he’s drawing alice away from the innocent 8 year old girl she was in the disney film, also, based on a BOOK not what walt disney put her as in his view. people are allowed different oppinions and views, and allowed to share them, and i think tim burtons the perfect candidate to follow in Mel’s and Walt’s footsteps.

Oh dear, so much angst, so much opinion, so much “information”, and the film won’t even be released until…when? Why don’t we all take a radical approach, and wait and see!

  • Anonymous

Holy ….. I can’t wait until this comes out Tim Burton is amazing, and I hope everyone realizes that the the original story was a lot darker than the disney version, that of course so many people will naively compare it too. And whether or not you think who he chose to play alice is beautiful or not, the fact is she doesn’t look like some model or princess or even 7 years old, because this is not based off the disney version where everything is beautiful and fanciful, this girl is real, just like someone you would see walking down the street or at your local coffee shop. Why do people in this culture expect every woman on screen especially maijor role actors to be drop dead gorgeous…what is wrong with someone being real, having true unaugmented beauty…have we as a culture forgotten what true beauty is and now just believe whatever tv tells us too, so that all the cosmetic companies surgery or makeup etc will get more money, why is it that more than half of the entire population in the U.S. is overweight and eats at mcdonald’s all the time but yet you expect beauty to only be women who starve themselves, and torture themselves. What message does that send to your wife and kids? Sorry went off on a tangent but seriously before you start criticizing someone why dont you look at yourself and figure out why you have that point of view, why do you have those beliefs? are they really yours or society forcing our eyes and changing our beliefs?
Which is a major reason why I love Tim Burton so much is that he never does anything that anyone else does(for you nitpickers…he never does anything the way others do it) and he always does things the way he wants to not the way society or culture think that he should, and i have a lot of respect for him because there are so few people in this world that truely act themselves without just going with the flow…

  • Keirsten

I am so very very excited for this. I positively adore Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. I have been curious for ages as to what a Alice in Wonderland movie that was made more similarly to the book would look like. Perhaps if i cross my fingers hard enough they’ll suddenly finish the movie early….

  • Cassi

To the person who said that Tim Burton keeps repackaging the same thing over and over again:

Time Burton has a specific style. It’s not everyones taste, but it’s beautiful. The way he uses colors and camera shots are completely unique. That’s like saying Picasso should haven’t painted in his specific style, or that Derain should have said screw the fauves and do something else, etc etc

Nothing is wrong with having a specific style. He doesn’t always tell the same story, even if he stays within similar genres. Alice in Wonderland, Sweeny Todd and Willy Wonka are all completely different movies.

  • Anonymous

    This is going to suck.

  • Shans

I’m indifferent towards Burton films, bar The Nightmare Before Christmas which I grew up with as a kid, I still love it. I can definitely appreciate his stylistic approach to things. I love Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass and and am very much looking forwards to seeing his take on things (:

  • Anonymouse

A little disappointed to see that he’s chosen a blonde, wavy haired Alice but oh well, one can’t have everything. Should be interesting, certainly, and Burton will ensure it is pretty.

    Something to look forward to.

  • Xena

I have no problem with Alice being a blonde and i don’t really understand people who do. Tim Burton is a director, whose movies I find are epic! Within the industry, he has done spectacular things and I trust his vision!

To the person who said Nell was not an extra obviously wasn’t on the set that day. I was and Little Nell was most definitely an extra, alongside my own child and their son. So there.

  • Karl Whiteman

Burton is going to pull this one off beautifuly. Even before i heard he was thinking of doing it I always said that he should do his own interpritation of Alice in wonderland. My only slight wory is that as much as i love Johnny Depp, his potrayal of willy wonka wasn’t quite right in my eyes, i’m afraid to say that i think he over did it slightly on the crazy side of wonka and although there is no other man who could ever play the mad hatter in a Burton film other than Johnny Depp I dont want to see any of Willy Wonka (who has similarities to the mad hatter) slipping out in this role.

  • Jeffery

Alice in Wonderland- what a fabulous concept for Tim! Absolutely Fabulous! Do it right, and good Tim. I hope it will be like his “James and the Giant Peach”- live action with stop motion animation puppets. I appreciate his Art, and artistry. I hope he over-does the colors as usual, bright and popping and child like. You gotta put up with the darkness in his movies, but sometimes its so worth it because of the ride! Its always a ride with him! I think he should do a sequel to both “Mars Attacks” and “Ed Wood”. I also think he should hurry up production on “Alice” because the Rapture is coming soon, and I would like to see it before God takes his kids home. And on that note, I pray for Tim. I know he is famous and all, but is human like all of us. Made out of the same old dirt. My friends think its quirky that I pray for celebrities like him, but I guess I love him so much I just hope he knows God. Judging from his take on life and the afterlife, I would assume he does not. I still dig his stuff, though. I also pray for Cher, and David Bowie. I want them to come to God before they run out of time on the planet. We are not here very long. And I figure, maybe nobody prays for them. So I do. Jesus said, “I am The Way, The Truth, and the Life, and NO MAN comes to the Father but by me.” Have fun down here, yeah, but make sure you don’t check out before making things right with the Creator God- The Master Artist who made stars and whales and venus fly traps and Love. God gave Tim and Cher and Bowie their amazing gifts, and I just hope they come to the knowledge and realization of this. God gives gifts to all his children, its just that some people say thanks to Him, and some think they do it all on their own. God gives every man ‘free will’- a choice. He is a gentleman in the sense that He knocks at the door of your heart throughout your life, and will come in if you invite Him. God doesn’t send anyone to Hell, you get to pick where you go. Choose Life. We are all just doing time on planet earth. Waiting for the healing.. . . and Tim’s new movie. Blow it UP Tim!!

in the grand scheme of life. what will it matter that there is another adaptation of an irrelevant story out there? why don’t we all just live. why can’t we just be and leave?

Classics are always interpretations, because before they were movies – they were stories. Tim Burton isn’t “pissing on all the classics” simply because Tim Burton will not be the LAST interpretation of Lewis Carrol’s book. Seriously, if you want to see the story butchered, go & look in your video store. There will be an off brand animation that will completely open your eyes to just how many times these classics will be done & redone.
There are plenty of people who love Tim Burton’s style. Plenty of people who dont. Those who do, are not all goths…those who dont arent all idiots, however anyone who doesnt care for Tim Burton & has enough time to gripe about one of his up & coming films is simply a loser. No one is strapping you to a theatre chair and gluing your eyes open. Just hope your kids dont beg you to take them.

    To: Tim Burton
RE: Why I’m so tired of you.

    Dear Mr. Burton,
I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of your work. I mean, it’s alright, and I loved Nightmare Before Christmas as a child, and most of your other movies have been pretty tolerable. Nothing too horrible, nothing that stuck out.
But I’m utterly tired of you. It’s not you, though. It’s your fans.
If I have to sit through one more high school class filled with overweight girls wearing ill-fitting Nightmare Before Christmas sweaters, with NmBC backpacks and NmBC keychains talking for hours on end about how a live performance of Sweeney Todd is going on somewhere within a 500 mile radius, and they know because they get moist any time something Johnny Depp touched gets that close, and how Tim Burton could’ve done PoTC better because his would’ve been edgier and darker, and how much of a genius Burton is for using stop motion [as if that makes a film instantly good], I’ll just off myself. (sorry for the run-on… I was letting off a little steam)
I cannot stand the fanbase your mediocre films has given you. No other director carries this kind of reputation. I don’t see Tarantino fans wearing genuine “gold watches” and carrying wallets that say “Bad Motha Fucker” [actually, go to bmfwallets.com for those] while quoting the verse Jules is famous for. Eli Roth fans don’t walk around with the Hostel tattoos and spend hours on end talking about how the new film is gonna torture people.
In short, your films are okay. I enjoy them, and occasionally you make one that’s pretty incredible. However, I am ashamed to call myself a fan of yours purely because of the people I would be lumped with.
Don’t blame yourself, just your typical fan.
    -Tanner

Hopefully he brings out some of the darker more disturbing subtext of the story.
Lewis Caroll was a pretty twisted man.(he molested little girls and had a drug problem)

  • Daniel Fehrenbach

    Carroll’s story is a masterpiece.
Tim Burton will probably make it look otherwise in the eyes of future youth. This is a bad thing.
I think we can safely say that this is another Disney fail.

I just want to say something, obviously. Tim Burton didn’t remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was not a remake, but Mr. Burton’s interpretation of the BOOK. Before knocking Mr. Burton’s interpretations of stories that already have a film version out there, please, please read the original story. Please.

Disney does a good job of slaughtering some of the original stories to make them shiny and good for the younger generations, portraying an inaccurate version of the world. Disney ruined the book of Alice in Wonderland, and they also ruined The Little Mermaid, but I won’t get into that here.

Again, people, I beg of you – read the original stories of things, don’t just go based on a previous film adaptation.

  • San

Mainly to Mr. Phil E. Drifter who said:

Those pics are totally photoshopped, I would know, I’ve seen a few photoshopped images in my day. Those pixelated shadows are all wrong, they totally blow it.

    (rant)
You’re an idiot, plain and simple. As someone who actually WORKS with photoshop daily and has seen millions of photoshopped images, not just ‘a few’ as you admit to seeing, I am telling you these are not photoshopped. Those ‘pixelated’ shadows are not there, if I am thinking of the correct pictures you’re speaking of, the shadows are being cast on pebbles and other small/fine/grainy-like sized objects. You’d be able to tell that if you looked at the texture of the surface. Which to some, apparently, can be seen as being pixelated. Possibly, maybe. (/rant)

As for the actual film? I love the idea. Since everyone else has already pointed out that it’s based off the book and to go read that before slamming things. XD

  • Prof. of Fine Arts

To those who seem to think that all Tim Burton is able to create is a Goth interpretation of the world, I am sorry but your very close minded. He is a creative genius and his imagination is full of color and intricate details. The plot of his stories carry a value of mortality and beauty. It is of dense thinking to allow yourself to criticize his imagination. In the mind of any true artist, one does not wish to please everyone, but to allow the outside world into their world. Hate it or love it, Tim Burton is original. I am very ecstatic to see what his take on Alice in Wonderland will be like.

  • Anonymous

some people are going to like it and some people are going to hate it. i love tim burton movies, but whenever someone does anything to do with alice in wonderland, i get pissed off.
Alice Liddel (the girl carrol wrote the book for) was my great great grandmother and i cant stand how much disney screwed up the story. She was YOUNG with BROWN hair. i dont like you new alice. sorry :(

and i cannot say im one of those teenage girls who loves tim burton movies, i’ve only ever seen 2.

  • San

    To kthxbai-

God I hate it when people use comic strips that not everyone reads to base a joke off of. If you do it, link it to begin with. Not all people know that the cake is a lie, after all. (And if you haven’t played Portal, ignore that)
If you say an image is photoshopped for a movie that WILL have CG elements in it, it is still rather idiotic to say they are fake. As I said, use a joke from the web, a movie, or a game for something, link it, or you’ll have rants about it. Artists hate it when the “That’s so fake and done in Photoshop” card is pulled without an actual basis on it.

I can’t believe that I’m actually writing in on this, but there’s been a lot of time on this page wasted debating Mr. Tim Burton’s artistry, myself now not excluded.

All I have to say is this: you do not have to slaughter a life to sustain yours. It’s okay to dislike a work of art and a series of creative choices. But don’t call into question this man’s integrity. That’s simply mean-spirited. Please take into consideration his accomplishments. Then proceed to measure them to yours.

First, and most importantly: Tim Burton is amazing. Tanner, if you don’t like someone because of his fans, then you shouldn’t like anything popular. Ever. Just because you see a lot of Nightmare stuff on your girlfriend doesn’t mean she’s the only one that likes it. I think your anger comes from a lack of success in your own life and that you ought to get some help for it seeing as how you obviously wont have any. (I assume this becuase you have stupid reasons for the things you do. Like not liking someone for being good at what they do.)Second, no director is perfect. Burton just has an artistic, dark child’s imagination and can apply it to the big screen. I can’t wait for Alice. The cast looks amazing. Obviously Depp will be amazing, but is Mike Keaton (don’t know how to spell it. He was in Underworld) really going to be the cheshire cat? Anybody know how valid that is?

  • Anonymous

I apologize, it was Mike Sheen. Not keaton. my bad!

It kind of bothers me that Burton casts his wife in basically everything he does. Don’t get me wrong, she’s amazing and one of my favorites, but still. Favoritism, much? There are plenty of actresses out there that could do a role as good as her. But, she would make a GREAT Red Queen, as her part is. I’m just saying that it irks me that he can’t be so risk-taking to cast another woman in a movie… or maybe she won’t let him. :D

Other than that, I am super excited for this movie to get done filming and come out. Alice In Wonderland is my favorite old Disney movie, even if it didn’t follow the book. Tim Burton is my favorite director. Johnny Depp is my favorite actor. Helena Bonham Carter is one of my favorite actresses. Can this get any better for me?

I may just find myself the first person in line at the movie theatre and in the store to get the movie on DVD…

I couldn’t breath when I heard Tim Burton was going to do Alice in Wonderland. It was like a dream come ture. Alice in wonderland is my most favoret story in the world. I have both books and six different movies I’ve been wanting him to make this movie FOREVER!

to anyone who is annoyed that helena bonham carter gets a lot of parts in burton movies, shes treated like anyone else that would come in for the part. time burton makes her audition for her rols. he auditioned everyone in sweeney todd even johnny depp and we know how many times they’ve worked together and they’re best friends. it would be easy to say he just gives parts to his friends but he really makes them work for their part.

  • moonlightangel

Tim Burton is pure genuis. he has the ability to write a masterpeice adn anything he remakes is twice as good as the original. the movies i would like to see him remake are as follows
    1) cirque du freak series
    2) Phantom of the Opera (although the 2004 movie was spetacular)
    3) devil diary (this was a movie on lifetime)
    4) anything happy and cherful, change to tim’s art.

it’s my dream to be a script writer for tim burton. i wouldn’t even care if he didn’t give me credit. just to be in teh precence of such genius, is a reward all in it’s self. Of course, how cna i not praise Johnny depp, and helena bonham Carter? personally though, i think Leighton Meester (she plays Blair on GOssip Girl) would make an excellent ALice.

  • dolfanjim

    For Tanner and anonymous.

    First Tanner RE: NMBX.
The amount of clothing, toys and articles related to this film are not in anyway Mr. Burton’s fault. It is a Disney picture and Disney does like to flood the market with collectibles and the such when there is a demand for it. Yes, I am sure Burton get’s a nice little commission but it is Disney that licenses the items out and then those companies make it. You can’t condemn Burton for making a movie that has a particular audience or is that favorable among many.
Danny Elfman produced yet another great CD for this movie with Great artists, his second. Kudos.
I am sure that if there was an interest in Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs there would be stuff out there too.
As for anonymous. Great job in your statement regarding Charlie and Chocolate Factory. Dahl HATED the original although I like it very much. And anyone that disagrees with the fact about POTA and CCF read the books. The actual lyrics for the songs in CCF were written by Dahl, it’s actually in the book and put to music by Elfman. As for POTA the ending is in the book. Although Markie Mark was a cardboard cutout it is too bad that Depp was not available.
The makeup was fantastic, the sets great and the story was legitimate. Roth was fantastic.

Wow, a gothic movie done by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp? Who could do the soundtrack? Maybe Danny Elfman? I thought Mel Brooks reused the same people ad nauseum…sheesh!

  • Anonymous

I am very happy with how this movie is turning out. It resembles a lot of the original illustrations from the book – lots of little, intricate details, the fancy and eclectic Victorian clothing, and the overall atmosphere. I am pleased that Tim Burton will be drawing mainly from the novels and (of course) adding his own, unique twist to it.

Please, Tim Burton is not “gothic”. I get filled with slight misanthropic rage when people lump things into categories that media and fashion have established for us and tell us is socially acceptable. Burton is just portrayed that way due to the commercialism of the paraphernalia from his movies, and Hot Topic (who will take anything and everything and make it “dark” and “scene” and market it to people who need to feel these things). What Tim Burton does is his own, unique style, which can be said for any director and/or artist. His works are not “gothic”. They are simply the product of his imagination and style. Neither is he “dark”. His works are about beauty and humanity, or what it is to be human; to feel, to love, to hate, to question. I suppose that humans are “dark” by nature, but now we’re just arguing semantics. There is a lot of beauty to being human, and Tim Burton happens to focus on that aspect.

Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass has a lot of similar themes. I think Tim Burton will do wonders with this movie, especially since he is adapting it from the books. (Although he might do well to branch out a little bit with his casting choices. It wouldn’t hurt to get some new blood in the future, as good as Johnny Depp and Helena Bohnam-Carter are.)

On another note, for those of you complaining that the posters on this page have no life, well, you don’t have to read or post on this. If you don’t like something, no one is forcing you to watch, read, or listen to it. You are doing it by choice and should not be condemning others for liking something, by choice, that you don’t like. It’s silly. In response to some comments about how dumb Tim Burton fans are: People dress a certain way, act a certain way by choice. If you don’t want to be a part of it, don’t. You can like something without getting involved in an aspect of it you do not like. And it certainly does not mean that you will get stereotyped with the rest. Why is it wrong if people just want to fit in somewhere, however sad it is? (Which also goes along with the comment I made about Hot Topic – it may have sounded crude, but I did not intend to make it sound as if I were ridiculing.) Everything anyone does is by choice.

Now, I think that this movie will turn out fine. It is in good hands, with a reliable cast, and a wonderfully creative mind behind it. If you don’t like it or don’t want to see it or whatever, don’t. But I am very hopeful for this movie and am eagerly anticipating it’s release. Go read the books – maybe things will begin to make sense.

  • Anonymous

People, please note that Alice in Wonderland was a BOOK (author is Lewis Carroll) before Disney destroyed, I mean, made a it a movie. Do people read books anymore? I feel like I’m the only one…Also, those of you complaining that Charlie and the Chocolate factory was a lame remake, you’re wrong. You can think it lame, but it was not a remake of the “original” movie. It was, in fact, also a book (author is Roald Dahl). Burton did an adaptation of the book. Sleepy Hollow was also a book. Burton did an adaptation. Is it so wrong to be inspired by a story one loves and make a piece of art out of it?

And another thing: there are people out there saying that The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride were the same. You are, in fact, mistaken again. Watch the movies again. They have completely different themes. Need help? Here, let me explain. Corpse Bride focused on accepting fate. Emily (the corpse bride) had her chance to marry. She tried to take it away from someone (Victoria) because she was so distraught about it. In the end, she realized her selfish ways, realized that she already had her chance, and let Victoria and Victor live their lives (they were also quite in love). On the other hand, The Nightmare Before Christmas, although Jack gets a little selfish as well and must realize the error of his ways and mend them, does not focus mostly on the love aspect. Sally and Jack realize they are perfect for each other because they both need each other. While both movies have a similar “realize the error, then fix it” idea to it, they are in no way the same. Again, watch them.

(Also, even though Henry Selik directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, it was Tim Burton’s original characters and story. It was still his idea. There is also a book you could read the original poem in. Do some research, people. If you have time to make angry and ignorant comments about things you dislike, then you have time to look something up or actually read something for once in your life.)

  • Alice

ive always loved the book and im a little afraid for this movie but im also very excited. tim burton will keep the darkness in the movie and not make it so happy and joyful like the disney version, but the disney version it the one that made me like the book even more! i just think it would be better if the movie was animated not with real people because the actress doesnt put of the alice look to me but thats just my opinion.

    Graciaaaasss!!

i gotta say, the movie from disney was stupid and the book was cute, not scary. although, it does fit with a darker twist i suppose. i guess i just thoght alice was a bit of a dipstick in both. the cheshire’s my favorite anyway, so i hope they make him all…well, him! <3

Okay so I don’t really care about all the slander or what-have-you going on but I must say that Lewis Carroll is my favorite children’s author and I love ALICE IN WONDERLAND! I hope if this is a great success, Burton should also do the sequel of THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. That would be totally awesome.

And Johnny Depp will be a completely sweet mad Hatter! yeah!

  • Anonymous

Umm yeah in case no one knew this, the original Alice in Wonderland is a pretty dark book. It doesn’t explore the imagination of childhood unfortunately. It explore’s a little girl’s need for acceptance in her world. And in literature the little girl represents the innocence lost in a world with twists and turns. Hmm maybe all of you saying that Tim Burton is “darkening” or “ruining” Alice in Wonderland should actually do some fucking research on the novel itself. The novel is dark. Carroll (the author for all those dumb fucks out there) was a drug addicted victorian writer who had a pretty dark past of his own. It’s like the insanity of the mind trying to be kept away. Oh and there are psychiatric disorders characterized by an Alice in Wonderland complex.

Oh wow Burton is actually dipicting something correctly!!!

    WOAH!

All of you that said Burton is destroying this story are naive. And now look like dumbasses. Use your heads.

I am tired of this art school spielberg taking on timeless pieces and blowing a load of black and white pinstripes all over it. Once a moon I respected old Burton but after Mars Attacks its just a Hot Topic scam. And for all you Timmy fans who need your Nightmare Before Christmas fix know this he didn’t direct it! This is why Nightmare went over well but Corpse Bride was a sham. If you want to see a good movie or one with substance like Alice in Wonderland turn no further than Coraline directed by Henry Selick. This piece written by Neil Gaiman oh and Henry Selick directed Nightmare Before Christmas…Funny.

Someone explain how Tim Burton and Michael Bay keep making movies. On the one hand explosions and car chases on the other black and white stripes and stop motion. I understand Hollywood wants a buck but come on did anyone even see Planet of the Apes or Sleepy Hollow.
(Whatever happened to Pee Wee’s Big Adventure)

  • Anonymous

Ive got an idea why dont we give the movie to a director who knows what he is doing and can use johnny depp properly…hmmmmm…. who could that be oh yeah Terry Gilliam. I mean he did do Tideland, Fear and Loathing, Brazil, Jabberywocky (Wait where did the poem come from oh yeah Through the Looking Glass) 12 Monkeys, Fisher King, Monty Python and the Holy Grail etc… Someone please kill Tim Burton so we can stop having mediocrity incarnate… You had you run in the 90′s so die already like Kurt Cobain… If you would of done that then I could still respect you. But I guess thanks for Ed Wood and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

wow, you guys have no idea. Tim Burton is a cinematic GENIUS! his movies like Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice were masterpieces! His adaption of willy wonka was amazing and Alice is going to be nothing less than mind blowing! Tim Burton is the only choice for an Alice remake. I can’t wait to see this film!

  • Anonymous

WHAT’S WRONG WITH ALL YOU RETARDS? TIM BURTON’S PERFECT FOR ALICE IN WONDERLAND. HE MAKES DARK CHILDREN FILMS, AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT ALICE IN WONDERLAND ALWAYS WAS MEANT TO BE. I cant wait to see it.

I can’t believe the nerve of some people! Tim Burton truly is a cinematic genius! The movies has made are nothing less than wonderful! He i creative, innovative & just a sheer genius! He just has a way of making a story really come alive. Everything he does with Johnny Deep is nothing less than breathtaking! He is wonderful, I wouldn’t trust anyone but Burton to make this film. & with a wonderful cast this movie will be AMAZING!

Please don’t disappoint me Mr. Burton. I love Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter but could you recycle them any more?

Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite stories, so please do justice to it.

  • Charli

to all the folks complaining because Tim is always using Helena, Johnny and even Danny in his films. so what. the critics and the box office point to it being a good team. and that’s the real issue in this business. yep that’s right, moviemaking might be artistic but it is still a business.

personally I love the combination. rarely has anything not be entertaining at least

I’ve always fantasized about making my own film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, and I never could decide who would be best at playing the caterpillar. Alan Rickman is perfect! I can’t believe he had never occured to me, but I guess that’s why Tim Burton is making movies and I’m . . .well, not. But of course, Johnny Depp was the first and only person that ever came to mind for the Mad Hatter. I actually thought of Donald Sutherland as the White Rabbit for some reason. I think he could pull off the neurotic, fidgety vibe the rabbit gives off.

he makes the worst films ever. ruining another classic. only film i liked that had anything to do with him was nightmare before christmas which he didnt even direct. all credit went to him and not selick. how about he uses some other actors aswell.

  • Anonymous

My word, do people ever do any kind of research anymore? Yes, Henry Selik directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, but a lot of the visionary elements were talked over with Tim Burton and he was frequently consulted. Burton had been wanting to do a film adaptation of his original story for awhile. Since he was busy with Batman before Nightmare had a script, he couldn’t do it all himself. He picked Selik to direct it because they share a similar style and vision and Burton trusted Selik not to muck up his work. Oh, and it was Burton’s story to begin with. Now, don’t get me wrong – Selik is amazing. What he did with Nightmare helped make it very popular (Selik’s Slow Bob in the Lower Dimensions is really amazing…too bad he never continued with it). But just because someone else directed a Burton film does not mean it was not Burton’s. Hence the name “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas”. But, I’m pretty sure we are all here to discuss the current Burton film, not gripe about films past.

Going back to the research comment I made earlier, people should really think before they comment, unless they really know what they are talking about. Burton is doing an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s novels Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. It is rumored that this movie will focus on Alice returning to Wonderland when she is older, hence the older actress being cast as Alice. Since the film is in production, a lot of things can change. I’ve seen a picture or two of Depp’s Mad Hatter. The make-up is a little drag queen-esque, but that may very well change (seeing as the movie is in production and everything is being worked on). Other than the make-up, I really liked the costume – it fit the style of the original illustrations form the novel well, as does the costuming in the above pictures, but I cannot make an accurate judgment because I have yet to see any film/acting clips. The make-up may not even be a problem, because, as sources say, all the Wonderland scenes will be motion captured and CGI’ed over (think Beowulf). I am going to be reasonable and declare that, before I make any sort of judgment as to the film’s quality, I must learn more about it and see some footage. Until then, my hopes are high, and I will continue to look into the production of this.

  • Anonymous

Just an FYI…Lewis Carroll is a pen name. Alice in Wonderland was written by Charles Ludwig Dodge. All you people correcting others about the book should probably know that.

  • Anonymous

    *Dodgson

  • Anonymous

I am fully aware that Lewis Carroll is a pen name for Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. I use the pen name because that is what is used on the novels, probably because Dodgson did not want to use his actual name. Wait, isn’t that what a pen name is? Astounding! Also, learn to spell it right before you go correcting others.

I hope this film is being made in response to Americans Mcgee Alice being made in to a film…sounds wicked right? until you find out Sarah Michelle Gellar is playing Alice. Does anyone remember her awful appearence in the American remake of The Grudge? Did anyone pay any attention to her diabolical acting skills. Obviously not, because if they had she would be banned from all Horror movies ever. Go back to hollywood.

  • Anonymous

Lewis Carroll was NOT a drug addict and the book is NOT CREEPY OR DARK IN ANY FUCKING WAY. The entire story is political satire mixed with childish imaginings. There is NOTHING “dark” about ANY part of it. There are some weeeird things, but it is mostly Victorian British humor that is lost on us today.
Read the fucking book before you claim it’s dark.
And while you’re at it, read the annotated version and do some REAL research.

  • Anonymous

QUOTE:Lewis Carroll was NOT a drug addict and the book is NOT CREEPY OR DARK IN ANY FUCKING WAY.

Actually, he did opium. He was also a pedophile. He had pictures of young girls and even asked Alice’s parents for her hand in marriage. There was a movie about it…Anyway, can’t wait for this sequel!

  • Craig

Well, if you are all going to get pedantic about this, call the book by the proper title: Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. Oh, and you must read The Annotated Alice, it cannot be praised highly enough.

  • Anonymous

I am really excited from this movie, the casting was great. I don’t care if it’s darker, it’s just a different interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. I’m excited to see what Tim Burton will do with it

  • Gia

Man, why is Alice suddenly 20? What angle does Burton intend to take with the film? I bet he wanted to make a dark version before the American Mcgee’s Alice movie people had their say…

  • Anonymous

i am very excited to see what tim burton will do with alice and wonderland. i am kind of a novice when it comes to him, but all of tim burton’s movies i have seen i loved. so i don’t really see why this one should be any different.

“he makes the worst films ever. ruining another classic. only film i liked that had anything to do with him was nightmare before christmas which he didnt even direct. all credit went to him and not selick. how about he uses some other actors aswell.”

Why would you get new actors if you are comfortable with your past cast and the cast works well under your direction?
Alice In Wonderland is about a young girls adventures that take her to realise what world she really needs to be in. Tim Burton has loads of experience in relating multipul worlds to one. Take BeetleJuice for instance, there is the land of the living, and the land of the dead. He pulls in that Lydia, the young girl who builds up an infatuation with the dead, belings in the land of the living, as much as she loves Adam and Barbara and wants to be with them, they show her that she can have the best of both worlds if she stays alive. Another example of this is in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Jack is better off left in the Holloween Rhealm then he is in Christmas, because that’s the way he has lived for so long, but he becomes tired with the Halloween spirit, and tries to take on something new, Christmas. Having failed with his own personal Christmas, Jack realizes that Halloween is where he belongs, and it’s what he does best.
Therefore, I believe Tim Burton will do a fine job in creating this Alice In Wonderland, and I think it will come out just as great as his films such as BeetleJuice, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

“Well I found the book quite scary if you’ve actually read the book instead of watching a waste of a movie u would think this also”

If you are so concerned about people not reading, and watching the movie instead, the least you could do is spell properly, and encourage them to read.

  • Liz

I really can’t understand why everyone is being so irritated by a fucking movie!!! If you don’t want to see it then don’t go see it! It’s quite easy: just don’t, nobody’s making you, you’re not a compulsive moviewatcher who just can’t turn his head away from the screen or whatever. Ofcourse everyone has the right to his own opinion, it’s your bloody right to think he’s shit. I personally adore him, his movies, his cast, his ideas, his world, his drawings, his poetry and so on but I dislike other directors and actors whom are very popular amongst others. I don’t need them to stop doing wathever they do and fuck of just for me, how sellfish is that?
And for those who say he’s ruining a classic: why? he’s not changing the original, is he? He’s just making an own version, and if you’re against that you might just as well be against any form of artistic expression!
To all this I say less hate, more Tim Burton (and cohorts ;) ) -movies

Btw it’s disney that softens and cutens up all fairytales most of them are in there raw version very rude and sexual explicit and that’s no good rep for disney :) think of snowwhite wich is actually about an oedipus-complex and little red ridinghood (or whatever english is not my motherlanguage as you’ve might have guessed :p) wich is a cautionary tale + sex ed for young girls with their first period.

  • Liz

Oh and I would like to ad that in my opinion Burton doesn’t make story’s scary… Think about: it’s not because there’s a skeleton that it’s evil i think his main thing is rather about not being evil. Is someone sad because they wear black, is someone because they are evil? And shouldn’t we all just question the world we live in every once and a while: is all this really right, or just because we where thaught to? And if you don’t fit in maybe it’s really not your fault but society’s wich is so eager to let nothing weird or out of the ordinary break the pattern. But wonder, is the pattern really that good?

  • Liz

*Is someone evil because they are ugly or different* that should be

  • Stephanie

This is one of my favorite movies, and Tim Burton is a genius, everything he does is amazing, I can’t wait til this is in theaters!!!

Read the fucking book before you claim it’s dark.
And while you’re at it, read the annotated version and do some REAL research.”

Actually, you need to re-read the “fucking book” and do some “REAL research”. Nobody is quite certain what went on in the life of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He loved photography and was good at it. He mainly enjoyed taking pictures of young children (mainly girls) but that does not make him a pedophile. Take nude photographers for example. They photograph nude people because they think it is beautiful – they love the human body and want to share that with people. It’s an expression of art. (Now, you can argue how tasteful it is and whatnot, but that’s not the point. The point is that it is an expression of art.) So, are nude photographers sexist or perverts because they love the human form? Now, I am not disproving that Dodgson was a pedophile, but so what if he was? Does that affect his writing or his art or his person? Should we discredit his works because of something people think is wrong? Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has been a classic for people of all ages for years. And you know what? People can believe what they want to about Dodgson’s writing – whether it is dark, childish, satirical, or pure fun. His book is all of these things. Don’t believe the darkness or childishness is not there because it infringes on your delicate understanding and refusal of human nature. Dodgson understood and so he put all of these things into his work. You can’t just pick and choose – you have to see that it is all there.

And to the poster “Liz” – I strongly agree with you. People should not be so worked up over a movie that hasn’t even been released yet. No one is forcing you to come to this site. No one is going to force you to drive to a theater, buy a ticket, and sit and watch the movie. If you don’t like it, ignore it – you’re making it an issue and part of your your life by choosing to do these things. It’s not just going to go away for you because you want it to – someone else wants it out there. I came to this site because I was interested to see the photos posted here. I wanted to see some more development of the movie. I can say that I like the costumes, but I cannot say that this movie will be terrible. Why? Because I have yet to see any acting footage. I cannot make a decision to the movie’s quality because the movie has not yet been released. Once I see it, then I will make a decision as to it’s quality.

On another note, the American McGee version of Alice based on the video game is not actually in production anymore. It has tried multiple times now to take off, but every time it’s been started, it’s been abandoned. And Burton is not drawing inspiration from the game; he only is drawing from the books and his mind. American McGee’s Alice is just another interpretation of the novel. Just as Disney’s movie was an interpretation, just as Burton’s will be. Everyone who is saying, “OMG he is liek totaly ruining ANOTHER classic WTF” are just silly. Like the nude photographers he is making a work of art – he wants to share his ideas, the beauty, the art.

So, if all you want to do is just spam and flame and rant and rage on here, fine. But you are not taken seriously. And even the people who are praising Burton are not taken seriously because there has not been ONE comment actually discussing the photos – what they mean, what’s in them, why is she on a ship, when is this taking place, etc. Not one person has commented on the fact that the actress playing Alice was cast to make her intentionally older and that she is wearing blue. What could the intentional older actress mean for the film? Does this mean that Alice is returning to Wonderland? Or is Burton just making the characters older? The blue dress is a signature of Alice – this may still represent her innocence or it could just be a way of identifying that it is Alice. It may be a way of identifying Alice as the outcast – she is the only person wearing blue…but then again there isn’t anyone else in costume (yet).

These are the things that should be discussed on this site. The pictures may as well not be there at all. All it could say was “Our First Look at Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland” and it would just make people say, “Fuck that!” or “Burton is my favorite! What a great idea!” Wait, isn’t that what’s being said now?

  • its alanna bitches

Have you ever read the Alice in Wonderland book. It’s a very dark story. With Tim Burton doing it it will be as it should always have been told. Pick up The collection of the Brother’s Grim and read cinderla. Her step sisters get their eyes pecked out by birds.

To the smart guys who knows Alice is a book, congratulations, you’ve enough qualifications for a primary school application. However, Burton seems to be deeply inspired by the game American McGee’s Alice which was based on the book yet had a darker atmosphere with an evil Alice. Though the game was fantastic it has been underrated mostly. Probably, Burton knows it and thought that its drawings and psychopathic visions suits the story much better than the classic illustrations of the original story.

You people have missed the point of Alice in Wonderland completely, it was a political satire, in other words just one giant political cartoon making fun of basically everyone. Now we do have to put that aside more when a movie is made because unless you happen to have been alive during the period when this book was written or have done a ton of research on this period (the latter being the more likely) you probably won’t understand the political satire in this book. So now to address the misconception among you that this book is “dark”, it isn’t dark at all, weird yes, very weird, but not dark. Burton has made some excellent films but if he is going to make this movie dark and twisted I will be sorely disappointed. Now, to those of you wanting burton to direct “Oz” no Del Toro NEEDS to direct that movie.

I have to admit that i really am looking forward to Tim’s new film, and I know I will probably be one of the first people to rush into the cinema to see it. I have always been a massive fan of his films, and I think the way he uses the same actors in nearly all of them really highlights how talented they are and how well he seems to work and get on with them. Actors such as: Jonny Depp, Helena Carter ect have been known to be quite close to Tim and therefore there should really be no complaints to weather he should continue to work beside probably some of his most talented and hard working actors.

QUOTE: “Actually, he did opium. He was also a pedophile. He had pictures of young girls and even asked Alice’s parents for her hand in marriage. There was a movie about it.”

You fucking lunatic. I mean, seriously; WTF.
    1. Even IF Lewis Carroll DID do opium -although I seriously doubt it- it was obviously because of a troubled home life/ inspiration for his writings. I don’t see you flaming about that!

    2. And how the actual fuck was he a paedeophile? He loved children, but platonically! He was teased at university and this lead to his dislike of adults; he thought that the company of children was more pleasant-that of Alice Lidell’s in particluar. The marriage proposal was only rumoured by Mrs Lidell. I mean, have you ever had a reaction like this to William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet?(Have you not yet learned that Hollywood implicates things and blows them entirely out of porportion??! Or are you just mentally inferior?) God. Charles Ludwig Dodge doesen’t even come close after reading Vladimir Nabokov’s ‘Lolita’!

Anyway, ranting aside, I reckon that this is a film worth anticipating, not just because of the cast and director, but because of the concept as a whole!-Its being filmed in stop motion, live action, motion capture! Only Tim Burton could pull that off in style though.

Although, loads of movies based on videogames just aren’t as good as the original, because tons of stuff gets left out, and the whole point of a videogame is to immerse yourself in the experience, right?

I remember Alice and her sister having a going for a picnic at the lake in a small boat. I can’t figure out what part of the book the above photos would be from. Anyone have a clue. The reason I wonder is the costume she has on, although it is unusual it is not what I expected :(

    1. He probably did opium, to which I say big deal. Many writers in the nineteenth century did opium (Robert Louis Stevenson and maybe Sir Artur Conan Doyle).
    2. Lewis Carroll was probably not a pedophile. He most likely hung around young women out of respect for their innocence, not to take it away from them. He preferred their company to that of adults.
    3. If he was a pedophile, no incidents were reported so at least he isn’t like today’s pedophiles.
    4. Tim Burton is a great choice to helm this lit. masterpiece. It deals with threats to innocence, which I can see Burton handling well.
    5. Lewis Carroll’s real name is Charles Lutwidge Dodgson

I’m excited to see this and I’m not sure if lewis carol was on drugs but it would make alot of since. I think he was on some sort of medication that made him halucinate but i can’t remember if this is true or not because I heard about it in a disscution in my english class. If he was on opium though it would make since, after all the caterpillar is smoking “hookah”. As far as him being a pedephile? i’m not sure i’ll hope in my time machine and find out…also keep in mind that back then some relationships with children were more exceptable. Also their was questions about the austor of Peter Pan so who knows, either way they wrote some amazing stuff. Edgar Allen Poe married his cousin and she was 14, Virginia wolf was messed up too. Their problems didn’t take away from what they did if anything it comtributed to their amazing work. lol btw i know there are alot of spelling errors it’s late and im on break cut me some slack lol. i can’t wait to see this movie it’s one of my favorite stories.

Ooh, physically, Mia looks very good as Alice. I haven’t seen any of her films but if they cast her in a TB movie, she’s probably good. I’m very excited to see Johnny as the Mad Hatter. He’d be perfect for the part, haha. I’m guessing the movie’ll be more like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory than Sleepy Hollow or other darker movies Tim’s done. I can’t wait to see what Wonderland’ll look like :] does anyone know the rating of the movie yet?

i dont think she should play alice shes too old like granny two shoes nah but she is to old she was younger in the original and what now shes 20 going on 80

It’s probably likely Lewis never did drugs (you cn ever know for sure the lives of dead people right?) or at least did very little (not all our drugs were illigal back then. Since it’s never really mentioned he did halucanating drugs in letters or diaries or anything. It’s actually more likly he suffered from whats now called ‘Alice in Wonderland Syndrome” which causes hallucinations and feeling like your body has changed size. It’s thought to be caused by severe migrains, which he did have.

It is actually assumed by scholars that Lewis waas ‘courting’ Alice’s older sister and her governess (who some think are actually the same people) not her. That supposedly caused the fall out between Alice and Lweis.

The older Alice is actually supposed to be like that, because in the movie Alice is returning to Wonderland. I think the movie is based on both the books and video game, just from what i’ve read everywhere.

I’m not sure if this has been said yet, my eyes started to hurt after the first page of comments 0_o. I’m not sure why everyones getting so angry and swearing, if you don’t agree with someone you can just say it but eh, i guess i do that to.

I love Alice based movies so i’m pretty excited about this. You can’t actually ruin a classic no matter what that’s why it’s a classic.

  • madame-pineapple

He was a pedophile, their are facts proving this, and he took nude photos of a little girl named Alice Liddel, the girl he proposed to twice, once when she was nearly 11, and then again after writing both books when she was 17 (she denied him both times). And you cannot say the nude photos were simply him being a wonderful photographer and had nothing to do with him being a pedophile, since the photos did in fact have Alice, well, you have to see them, but when you do it’s obvious of their nature. Any yes, god damn it I’ve done my research, since I enjoy reading books on the Victorian age and what do you know? They mention him! Which they should since he is an amazing author! And just because he was attracted to an 11 year old does not make his books any less great, so why the fuck does it matter? It’s not like he raped Alice, he was quite a gentlemen if you ask me! And if you want to know where I got my information, just ask and I’ll give you the name of the book I’m reading!

if tim burton makes it any way like charlie and the chocolate factory…then i personally don’t think it will be that great. i loooovvveee alice in wonderland (original movie and book) and i really hope he makes it just as good as most of the movies he has done in the past. i like the fact that he stuck to most of the crew from sweeny todd. good choice in cast…most defintely.

    AAAH I’m so excited.

  • Tilly

Wow, those clothes are absolutely beautiful. I’m absolutely dying for her boots! I wonder if Alice is going to be more mature, yet again in the book she comes across as a stiff victorian child at points, so maybe this just means the physical is finally catching up with the mental.
I hope this movie is darker…the disney cartoon is sickeningly sweet, and the Alice game by American Mcgee is far too disturbing (anyone who’s played it will tell you that, its messed up, even if it is interesting and awesome! lol).
I reckon Burton is going to produce his usual brilliance! a cute movie for kids with enough of an adult element for the big kids to like it too, and just like his other movies i expect he will make the upmost effort to bring a new take to the Alice in Wonderland story.
I’d love to see how they’re doing Johnny up as the Hatter, anyone have any idea where i can find pics?

Lots of stuff to argue about, but I’m not really interested in stating my opinion. However, I would like to clarify that Mia Wasikowska was not the young the young girl in Sweeney Todd. That was Jayne Wisener, and they do not look particularly similar.

This is going to be the best movie ever! The best part about Tim Burton is the way he adds the darkness into the movies. you have to appreciate his craft and imagination to understand it. I hope Danny Elfman is doing the music!!! Which I’m going to assume will most likey be the case. I personaly thought that the best part of his Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was when the factory opens up and all those dolls light on fire and Willy Wonka was a crazy wierdo. If you were locked up in some factory and was strange to begin with I would think that would be exactly that kinda of personality you would have. I love how all the background in his movies are chalky dark and have either chalky easter colors or those these vibrant colors it draws your eyes to what matters. It makes you understand the characters or the crucial things. I do not believe anyone will ever compare to him. Not sure if anyone saw Coraline but that movie is so great!

Doesn’t the girl who played Alice in the old movie have dark brown hair??? I think that was their worst mistake about choosing Mia Wasikowska although her looks kind of resemble Alice’s character… I don’t know… I’ll have to see it when it comes out but I’m not sure if I’d go to the movies for it. I don’t really get the boat… but then again her clothes don’t really match the old movie… I think the best thing to do is just forget the old movie completely when watching this one!!

After recently being introduced again to Alice and everything Alice related, due to being assistant director in an Alice in Wonderland play last year, playing American McGee’s Alice, researching this movie as well as Lewis Caroll and everything about Alice, it has come to my attention to address some things:

    1. Primarily, the book is what Tim Burton’s new movie is based on, however, he has heard of American McGee’s Alice and is adding some darkness from that. Again, the game was based on the book too and so is everything Alice related, so stop fighting.

    2. We all know the characters after our own introductions to Alice in Wonderland. Now we know who’s playing them. You may have different opinions on who is playing who, but face the facts, this is what we have, now we’re gonna work with it. Don’t cuss anyone out, sorry, but it’s annoying. I am, however, glad that Lindsay Lohan is not in this movie.

    3. You may want to do some research before you go see this movie. I am right now in the middle of Study Skills. Many of you, including me, don’t know what the whole ship thing is about. Please look it up. I will too.

    4. Yes, in the books and the game, Alice has brown hair. The Disney version did not and that has angered some people. Whatever. It’s hair. The actress picked to play Alice in this movie has blonde hair and that’s okay.

    5. I have no idea whether Lewis Caroll did drugs or was a pedophile, but we still need to realize that in his time period there weren’t quite so many restrictions on either one of those.

I have always pictured Alice (before watching any movie) with blonde hair. It’s been a while since I’ve read the book but I suppose I may be wrong. With the casting (which, might I add, I am quite satisfied with) I hope this will be a brilliant movie.

There are several scandalous and libellous ill-informed comments on this site. Please don’t start this notion (again) that Lewis Carroll and the two Alice books are drug related or drug induced. Its simply not true. There seems to be an increasing trend (particularly in America it seems to me) to make this suggestion, self-evidently, by ill-informed and ignorant people. I noticed recently that Mylie Cyrus made a rather rashly confident statement that Alice was all about drugs. Unless Ms Cyrus has some evidence or insight that has eluded 150 years of intense academic analysis of Carroll and his works, I think Ms “mass marketing” Montana and her like would do better to take a lesson in morality and humility from Lewis Carroll, a pious man that made little money from Looking Glass, pricing it as low as possible so as many children would be able to read it as possible, and giving away many free copies to homes and childrens’ hospitals, etc.
Carroll’s Alice books are beautiful, funny and imaginative, some of the characters are works of genius and the dialogue is sublimely witty, and rightly still considered a classic after 150 years.
I humbly recommend reading an annotated version (Martin Gardner’s “The Annotated Alice” is excellent).
Also, there is no evidence that Charles Dodgson was a paedophile. Many of his child friends’ reflections and memories are published and are usually fond memories or otherwise simply indifferent… there is not the remotest suggestion of anything sinister. I think these comments say much more about the commentators than Lewis Carroll.
On the hair-colour topic, it is the original Tenniel pictures in Carroll’s books (where Alice is undoubtedly blonde) that made Alice a blonde. Carroll obviously had the “real Alice”, Alice Liddell, in mind when he first told the story (Alice Liddell was brunette with shortish hair and a fringe) but never seems to have wanted to represent the physical appearance of Alice in the book as Alice Liddell. Before the story was published as “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, Carroll hand-wrote the story as “Alice’s Adventures under Ground” as a gift to Alice Liddell and it has her photograph pasted onto the final page. This includes drawings by Carroll himself, but they are black and white and its not possible to conclusively determine Alice’s hair colour, but note that her hair style (long) is not like Alice Liddell. When he was pursuaded to publish the story, he engaged Tenniel as the artist and collaborated closely. Carroll sent Tenniel a picture of a blonde girl called Mary Hilton Badcock to use as a model for Alice, but Tenniel did not work from models. Interestingly, Carroll criticised Tenniel for not using a model writing “Mr Tenniel is the only artist… who has resolutely refused to use a model…I venture that for want of a model, he drew several pictures of “Alice” entirely out of proportion – head decidedly too large and feet decidedly too small”. At no point does he express dissatisfaction with Alice’s blonde hair. So it pains me to say that Disney got
it right that Carroll’s Alice was blonde.
And…the only boats in Carroll’s Alice books are small row-boats. These scenes are presumably from some part of the script not based on the books.
I think Alice looks splendid in these pics and am eagerly anticipating seeing the film.

all the alice books are my absolute favorite books ever. i also did my senior research project on them and lewis carroll. in the little amount of research i actually did, no where does it say anything about drugs people. the guy just had an awesome imagination, something you don’t get to see much of today, unless it’s blamed on drugs.

and i think it’s great that tim burton is doing this film. every fairy tale has a darker version to it. it’s about time someone did one of this fairy tale. so long as they don’t screw it up too badly, what’s it matter if it’s a pleasantly confused story or if it’s beyond twisted??

just chill out and wait for the film to come out and see it then. no point in judging something you havent even seen

  • Anonymous

Everyone seems to forget that Lewis Carrol is a pseudonym Charles Lutwidge Dodgson used when he wrote the book. Dodgson was not only an author but an Anglican Minister, mathematician, and logician. The rumors of drug use are entirely unfounded and there has been no evidence found to support it. Also the only readily available drug at this time was opium which only produces hallucinogenic effects in large doses. LSD was first synthesized in 1938 and its effects were not discovered till 1943, peyote had not been introduced in the UK in the 1800s.
Also the belief that Dodgson was a pedophile is based on missing pages from his extensive diary, his photography of nude children, and a falling out with the Liddel family. The missing diary pages are believed to relate to the falling out between Dodgson and the Liddel family which is attributed to his relationship with a woman named Lorina, which could be either Alice’s older sister or her mother, which one is not identified. As for the photography, photos of nude children during the Victorian Era, were not seen as pornography but representation of innocence, many of the major photographers of the age produced them and they appeared in books, papers and even Christmas cards. The big thing people seem to forget is that we cannot view historical figures as if they are within today’s society, we must view them within the context of their own time. So thusly, no he was not a pedophile nor a drug user. He was a well educated man with an amazing imagination, who combined the two to create an amazing piece of literary work.

I like the fact that this is technically a sequel to the 1951 animated movie. That is why she looks older. She is supposed to be a 17 yr old. She runs away from a proposal and follows the rabbit, again, to Wonderland. The thing is, she doesn’t remember that she went there. I think this movie will be huge, and if not a commercial success, it most likely be an instant cult classic.

Weeeeellllllll throughout the whole book there are references to drug usage and serious mental diseases…. The door mouse is drunk all the time, the Mad Hatter had mercury poisoning, the queen of hearts CLEARLY had anger issues, the white rabbit was on speed, the caterpillar is obviously smoking a hooka, Alice is on i think shrooms or something the equivilant of that, the March Hare is on ecstacy…I can’t think of what the others are on, but my friends were the ones that told me all about that. Let’s not forget, my friends, that Lewis Caroll was a pedophile (my teacher told me that he was in love with a six year old so I have the right to say this)

All rumors of “Lewis Carrol” are unfound and unproven. There were speculations that he was in love with a young girl named Alice, but were never proven. If he was a pedophile, he was a closet one. As far as the book being references: speculations. Just because a critic reads it that way does not mean that that’s what Carrol meant. It’s a children’s book. It’s not supposed to really make sense.

Oh. My. God. Thank you to the same long-comment Anonymous person who agrees with me that Alice in Wonderland is not about drugs! I was honestly starting to think I was the only person on Earth who felt that the alligations about Mr. Caroll were not true. I do know, From ym hand written copy of “Alice’s adventures Undergroud” that caroll did in fact wish to marry Alice once she was OLDER!! He didn’t wnat her as a child! And, in fact, he was not on drugs when he told this story to Alice and her two sisters, he was in a row boat on a small lake when the girls asked him to tell them a story. He made Alicethe main character, and the two other girls creatures in the book. I do not believe Caroll was ever on drugs for I have also heard he was a Clergymen, which would go against what they believe. Eveyrone always says that he’s a pedo and was on drugs, but I don’t believe this is true. It annoys me quite a lot when people make these assumptions.
